Revving engine bad for transmission?

I have a question.

Does it hurt to rev the engine when in Park? I usually like to rev it really high (about 5500 RPM) in my Explorer and about 6000 RPM in my Mustang. Usually at the stop light, if im first, ill put it in park and rev it really loud and people think im crazy.

I did some really bad damage to my Mustang's 3.8L auto trans over the summer when I got a whole bunch of performance mods installed. I did cookies in an empty parking lot with smoke going everywhere (surprising for a V6), and i got a really loud thump in the tranny. It was hard to get back into Park. My transmission shop says i stripped about 50% of the life out of the tranny. (It was new 2 years ago when sold to me).

Thanks.

Ah yes the driver having fun with his car ploy. It will cost you to have fun.

Anyway, there is no good reason to rev your engine in neutral. I don't think it will hurt the tranny much unless you pop it into gear before it has a chance to slow down. The engine however might float a valve or something if you wing the engine unnecessarily. It may sound cool , but it doesn't do your engine any good. Later on as you get experience, you will realize that doing stuff like that costs you.

I would also wonder if you hurt the differential doing donuts. They are designed to allow slippage, but doing donuts a lot is not going to lead to long life. Sounds like you are in the learning stage, we all go thru it. Just takes awhile before we learn how to have fun without blowing things up.

Good Luck, save up some money for repairs,

Jim Henderson
