2018 F350 DRW 6.7 with 40,000 miles. I do not idle except to cool down after towing. Do not make short trips. Truck spends most of its time pulling either a 16,000 lb. fifth wheel or a 12,000 lb. dump trailer at highway speeds with the typical trip being 3 hours or much more. I bought the truck new and have not had any problems up to this point. To me the DPF should not need replacement with the driving conditions outlined above.
Engine light came on about 2.5 hours into a trip pulling my dump trailer. Return home after 2 weeks at destination no trailer, engine light on the entire time. Dealer, under warranty replaced the sensor in the tail pipe and the tail pipe. Again about 2 hours into the next trip not pulling a trailer light comes back on. Check new tail pipes black as Cole. Light goes off while at my destination. On the way back again not pulling trailer about 2 hours in engine light comes back on. Get home tail pipes still black. Now dealer is going to replace DPF? I my mind something else is causing the problem. Still consuming DEF at about the same rate as usual. Anybody have an idea what might be causing the problem? I find it hard to believe the DPF just went bad.
It's at the dealership being repaired under warranty. Just checked invoice from dealer on first repair no code listed. I will see if dealer pulled codes this go around and report back, may take a few days as they are not the quickest to return phone calls.
Senix, I would think you are correct. As soon as I get a response from the dealer about codes I'll post them. I think the code will show the sensor Falt for the tail pipe, sooted over my guess. Thats what they replaced first go around. On a trip from Maryland to St. Louis towing my 16,000 trailer last fall I noticed the exhaust pipes were sooted over but never got a code. Kind of forgot about it but did notice the pipes never cleaned out and I have towed a lot since then, never got an engine light. Probably should have taken it to the dealer then but I thought lacking a code they would say no problem found.
Just picked up the truck. Code found P2002 also states TSB 21-2332 was completed along with replacement of the DPF, no charge. Tech said it was cracked. I will clean the tail pipe and keep a close eye on the color of the tail pipes from here out. Thank you to everyone for the information.
