Its started to get a little colder here in VA (30 nights 50 days) and when i start the truck up in the morning (let it warm up for about 5 min) and i get on the road, the oil pressure guage acts up sometimes. When my foot is on the go pedal and accelerating, works fine, but when i left my foot off the pedal, pressure drops to 10-20psi and wiggels around there a bit then gets back up to about 30 or 40psi. Seems to only happen when i let off the throttle, but sometimes under a harder acceleration. But the problem seems to go away after about 40 min of driving. Could the oil just still be cold and the oil pump is cavitating? Any thoughts would be apprecieated....
F350xlt,
Sounds as if you have an aftermarket pressure gauge?
Could you tell me where you tapped the engine for your pressure gauge line or sensor?
Mechanical? electronic sensor?
Any help?
Thanks!
yea, ive got an autometer guage. I made an adapter from 11mm x1.25 to 1/8" pipe thread and then put in in a hole that is right next to the factory sending unit. That way i can have both factory and aftermarket.
Autometer claims to not have an adapter for the powerstroke motor to 1/8" pipe thread, thats why i had to make my own.
I made it by turning a 5/8" bolt down to the approiate size on the metal lathe, drilling a hole through the whole bolt. and then tapping the milled part of the bolt to 11mmx1.25 (goes into motor) and then tapped the head of the bolt to be 1/8"pipe threads.
factory is electric, aftermarket is electric. I suppose a T could be made, but i thought it was just easier to take the plug out that was right next to factory sending unit and then install autometer sending unit. OBTW, the 7.3L PSD black plastic nameplate will have to be removed and then modify the mounting if you want it back on there. Ill try to get some pictures sometime...
