I had the same problem on my old 93 Explorer, it also had the A4LD, and I know exactly what it is, you see the Torque converter is a lock-up torque converter. When the car gets in to the higher milage the seal on the lock-up shaft goes bad, wears out what ever, and this causes it to make a loud thud and go in and out between drive and overdrive. You can either fix it or let it be, if you let it be then eventually, but not for a long, long time, the lock-up feature will stop working but your car would continue to run like it has a regular torque converter.
The seal is inside the torque converter so you might have to replace the whole torque converter. You can get this at a local dealership. But you might want to talk to the guy's at the dealership because you might be able to just change that seal, I never fixed on mine, I just sold it and got a 94 Explorer. But then again I needed a newer car with less miles.
There is a filter screen on the 3-4 solenoid that cloggs. Check out atcdg.com in tech bull for A4LD. The valve body must be dropped to remove the solenoid keeper in the back. If you don't have a manual, you could get in trouble. There are a couple little plastic hockey pucks under the seperator plate. You will need new gaskets. You can get a manual for $16 at www.bulkpart.com a great filter for $10. Throw that metal screen piece of junk out. A complete gasket seal kit is $29. With this you can change the low/reverse servo seal which leaks at this age.
