Hello all anyone know of a liquid rust converter they recommend, I was going to try corroseal wanted to see if anyone has any other recommendations! Thanks much
I use Rustoleum rust converter in the spray can for stuff I can easily do again, or POR15 if I never want to touch it again and am willing to do all the prep work. In my experience, the Rustoleum, with a good topcoat, stands up to New England winters for a few years before it starts showing rust and needs to be done again. My rear axle was done with POR15 well over 10 years ago, has been driven every winter since, and looks almost as good as when I did it. Only the areas that take direct hits from road sand/debris show any sings of wear and it's only dulled the surface finish slightly.
The only way to stop rust is to remove as much as possible mechanically with sanding, wire brushing, grinding, cutting it out ,etc.etc.. Then you use a converter to stop whatever remaining rust you couldn't get and then use multiple layers of topcoat to seal it up and offer some damage protection. Adding a layer of chip guard will add extra protection, especially in areas that see road spray, and using something like Fluid Film/Woolwax/Etc, or even WD40, after it's painted will help to stop any future rust.
