Ford 360 motor update
I am looking at taking my FE 360 stock motor and doing a few upgrades. My question is, i am taking the stock two barrel intake and carb off and putting in a four barrel intake with Holley 600cfm carburetor, Do i need to do an upgrade to the fuel pump? Or with the stock fuel pump be ok with this increase of fuel demand?
Other changes include, installation of Hedman long tube headers, replacement of stock starter to high torque mini starter, distributor/wires/plugs, lots of chrome, new seals and paint.
You didn't indicate what you're going to do with the distributor, but if you want electronic ignition (a good idea!), I strongly suggest you keep your stock distributor and install a Pertronix Ignitor and Pertronix Flamethrower coil. Low cost, no muss, no fuss, very reliable, very easy to install. I have them in my '73 F100 (360) and '72 Mustang (302) and they've never given me a problem.
Why the new starter? The stock starter will serve you fine. If it craps out some day, you can get another one at your local auto parts store for not much money.
Sorry to rain on your parade. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, have the 360 rebuilt and install a 390 crank/rods/pistons to bring it up to a 390. That's money well-spent. If my 360 ever dies, I plan to do exactly that.
Be sure to get a dual plane manifold. If your truck is automatic get a wide ratio planetary gear set while having the transmission rebuilt. That along with a 3.50 axle ratio will also wake up a 360. If your truck is a standard try to find a wide ratio 4 speed top loader from a Mustang or convert to a 5 speed with overdrive. If you have dual exhaust be sure to have a balance or “X” pipe which will smooth out the exhaust pulses.
