Big hubs direction

Have a simple but not so simple question. I am working on putting some NOS ***** on my Highboy today and am not sure which way FORD intended them to go. I see pictures with them all over the place. I would have thought that the free and lock went on top but that puts the word FORD upside down till locked in. If you put the words free and lock down you can read the FORD perfect but to me that seams like it has a chance of moving from free to lock due to gravity. The FORD upside down really bother me so I changed around, but I would li’e to have them right more than what I like. Don’t need the nit pickers laughing at me! lol! Also any body know what the torque spec is in the Allen head bolts? I have #35lb on the brain.

This is how my NOS hubs are oriented. The Spicer manual that came with them says 30-35 ft lbs. Don’t over tighten them, people crank on them and ruin the chromed piece

Wow, those look great. I have been looking for a set and no luck….yet. 35# would have been ok. I will shoot for 32#. I can’t tell by the picture if mine are right or wrong on the orientation were the free and lock end up after bolting on.

I don't think there really is a top or bottom on a hub.

I just re-read this and am actually confused by your question. The **** can only install the one way in the hub. The hub assembly is going to rotate with the wheels. I wouldn’t worry about “up” or “down”, it will spin the second you start driving.

Yep, you are correct. Way overthinking this. I was having a problem with the driver side locking in. Turns out it was the back piece worn down about an 1/8”. Not engaging the hub with dial turned. Glad I had a spare hub for parts.
