Random warning lights and electronics going off.
In February 2024, my kids woke me and told me my hazards lights were flashing. Thinking it was my alarm I tried to turn the lights off with my remote. No luck. I had to go out and press the hazard switch. A couple of hours later it did it again. This time I just disconnected my quick disconnects I had installed on the batteries a few months prior.
The next day I cleaned all the battery posts and just visibly inspected things. Then 5 days later it did it again in the middle of the night.
There was nothing consistent with the weather. This started happening more and more often. Didn't matter if it was 0 degrees or 30. Dry, raining or snowing, it didnt matter. On the advice of a mechanic I checked my aftermarket flatbed and some of the other minor upgrades I had done. There were no shorts, nothing i had done was the cause.
After researching this issue, I gained access to the body control module. Visually, it looked fine. I didnt disconnect the wiring though to look at the actual connection points. My only Ford dealership in BFE alaska was booked out till May. I continued to use the truck out of necessity.
The progression went from the hazards (which I had disconnected the switch to see if it was the problem) to the door locks randomly and repeatedly like gun fire locking. The horn started going off and I had to pull that fuse. The tpm stopped working and the ebrake chime repeatedly sounded while in gear. Headlights would come on. There was probably more that I am forgetting.
Well yesterday the dealership had an opening and I was able to get in. They found it was the bcm and there was corrosion on the connectors. I am now waiting for the new part. If nothing else is wrong, it's a $1200 expense. They said after they replace the bcm, they might have to replace the wiring harness and they will have to verify that no other modules were damaged.
The bcm was installed and I was told they needed to replace at least one of the tpm sensors cause it wasn't reading and they could not finish programming the bcm until the tpm was working correctly. They soon discovered that the tpm wasn't working because it was tied to the horn fuse that I had pulled. Once the put the fuse back in they were able to finish the bcm. Total cost was $1420. $260 of that was for a new key. Bcm programming requires 2 keys and I only had one when I bought the truck.
I also brought the old part home. The bcm appears to have about a 50/50 mixture of male and female connectors. There were 5 obviously corroded pins on 2 of the male connectors. No telling if any if the female connectors were corroded.
