Does a 1978 Dana 61 with 2.5" brake shoes take the same brake parts and seals as a Dana 60 from the same year? I bought a Dana 61 that I want to put all new brakes and seals in it but am hoping to order online to save $.
I believe the Dana 61 was commonly used in the commercial line of Vans. The E-series. My Ford Vans in 3/4 ton full float rear diffs are Dana 61's.
If you read up on Wik-pedia, they have a good explanation of the Dana 61.
You will find that the Van Dana 61's have super high gear ratio's for highway mileage. Not so good for towing. Common gear sets may be a 3:31.
There is a BOM number stamped in the back side of the passenger axle tube. That will identify the original use.
Another interesting item is the diameter of the axle tubes, being larger that the pickups.
My E250 Van is actually considered a Bus, not School Bus. with commercial license, and a window van. Ha
Brakes will depend on the Vin or by simply measuring.

The master parts catalog here and here has the parts lists for the Dana 60 and 61. You should be able to answer your questions with that information.
