1986 inline 6 engine replacement
im new here. Have an 86 f150 with a cracked piston in cylinder 3. (Carbureted). Mechanic says it can’t be rebuilt. I’m having trouble finding a replacement engine from the re- manufacturers. Been searching for about 2 months now. ATK said they had one but it turns out it was not the correct type of 300. Any ideas where I can locate something compatible? Thanks

If Cylinder #3's only issue is a cracked piston, I see no reason why that engine cannot be rebuilt. Now, if the cylinder wall is scored so deeply that is can't be bored, then maybe I can see it becoming a parts source. There are lots of these engines that are available to be rebuilt. Heck, I bought a running one for $500. I think you might want to get a second opinion on that engine or go shopping for a good running one out of a similar year truck.
So why would not the ATK 300 motor work?
The only reason I can see is if it was a 87-92 EFI motor as they done have a fuel pump opening for the pump.
Everything else will work and you could run a electric fuel pump with out too much issues.
Also as said a junk yard motor that could be rebuilt.
Again it would most likely be a EFI motor but being it is going to get rebuilt have the shop open the hole for the pump, told bolt holes are already there.
On your motor with bad piston if the wall is banged up you could sleeve it.
Thing is it could run more than just rebuild a junk year motor.

Because of the head chamber shapes it may lead to pinging at a lower timing setting.
Now if you were replacing the motor in a EFI truck the EFI heads have thing 2 more manifold bolts as the EFI is so large and heavy it needs them.
But using the EFI head with the old log manifolds you just dont use them 2 bolts.

The 85 and 86 heads have the same 76cc open combustion chambers as the earlier heads meaning you can use any of the 65 to 84 engines as a direct replacement engine.
The 1987 and later engines are EFI and the heads have a high swirl combustion chamber that requires a totaly different ignition timing curve than the earlier engines.
