well, I have heard for years how the auto lock hubs on Fords are troublesome. It seems after 10 years of ownership I see what people mean. My right hub won't disengage. 2 questions. 1 is there a repair kit for the hubs or 2. Am I better off to buy a set of manual hubs? Also if someone could recomend a brand and place to purchase. Thanks.
i bought warn hubs at nappa for 64 bucks if your autos are 3 bolt you will also need conversion kit witch is 4 nuts and 2 washers about 36 bucks i would trash the autos
If they're not broken, you can just clean them up and hope for 10 more years.
Seriously though, Take them out and remove the brake band. Then flush some ATF thru them while working the plastic slider back and forth. After a coupla flushes and working the slider back and forth for 5 mins or so, they'll loosen up and work.
You'll be amazed at the crap that comes out of them.

How did you discover your right hub won't disengage? My truck drives like one of the front weels is engaged, but I haven't owned or driven the truck enough to know for sure.
Thanks for the info all. This is a great forum! xg325, I know that the hub will not disengage for 2 reasons. I was hearing noises from the right wheel when riding with the window down (like the gears erenot meshing properly. I then put it in 4x4 then back to 2wd. The noise stopped but now it steers like its engaged (when making a turn the wheels don not staigten out without turning the steering wheel). IF yours is steering like this chances are 1 or both hubs are locked.
bilter
If the noise is coming from the R hub lock, then it's the L one that won't disengage. The noise comes from the one that works, which is constantly trying to unlock, but keeps getting relocked by the other one.
Ok here is a followup question.... I have a 93 with the auto hubs replaced and believe that the manual hub on the right side is dry or rubbing. I get a noise off that side and it seems like I have to use the gas pedal while going down hill. Is this something I can grease or is it easier to just replace? With having the manual hubs on it now will I have to use another conversion kit or will the standard manual hubs now work?
You can replace a manual with any other manual OR the 5-screw autos - once you have the normal spindle nuts ("conversion kit"), you don't have to worry about changing hub locks again.
Yes, you can and SHOULD remove & inspect your hub locks about every 6 months or IMMEDIATELY after fording water deeper than the hubs. The Haynes manual and the Brakes & Hubs photo album in my signature link show how to pull them.
Great info Steve, thanks! I think I will take a 2 step appproac to this. Inspect , clean & lube hubs, run locked in for 250 mi. Then if still a problem tey installing manuals.
