I was towing the rv home from Florida to Maryland and got a buldge in my tire on my 2016 f250. I put a spare on which is slightly smaller. I need to replace all the tires when I get home anyway as they have 55000 miles on them.
I am currently running 295/65 r20 and honestly have hated the ride, but was going to wait until the tires wore out. I was thinking about going to a 285/75 r18 with tremor rims(which is close to what I have now)
After seeing my spare 295/70r17 I looks pretty good, and could get a set of blacked out OEM steelies and go that route.
The tires 17in tires have a 3900lb weight rating each and the 18in tires have a 4000lb weight rating each I want to get the smaller rims to smooth the ride on the truck some, but don't want to sacrifice towing capability with the 5th wheel. Which open would be the best or is the difference minimal?
I would say the difference is minimal. 18” rims are more common now days on these trucks. 17” are not offered hardly anymore. There also quite a weight difference between aluminum and steelies. Just something to consider.
Steal rims better for heavy hauling like over road hotshots with DOT numbers . AL is fine for average joe, I'm still running my old AL 16s.
I'm not a big fan of lower profile, I like more meat to absorb shock. I've seen low profile rims grenade on impact with road debris. I'd rather lose a tire rather than the rim and tire. I've runover some pretty big stuff at 70 mph from Florida's aquatic 12' lizards to AC parts falling out of trucks in front of me, as i couldn't avoid it due to traffic conditions. With few problems. I also run 10 ply tires religiously.
