My check engine light is on, and there is no reason for it other than i need to get the 105k service. Does anybody know a way to turn off the check engine light, so i dont need to spen d the 90 bucks on pluging it into the computer.
From what I've seen, Ford didn't put any "clocks" in their cars that turn on the CEL. The CEL on means that the computer is seeing something abnormal. If you have a '95 or older, all you need is a jumper wire to read the trouble codes. On a '96 or newer you need a scanner, but you can sometimes get parts houses (like Autozone) to read the codes for you, or "lend" you a code reader. I've also seen OBD-2 code readers (don't have the full functionality of a scanner, but will read trouble codes) for $40-60.
If it were me, I'd find out why the CEL is on, and try to fix it. The only ways to turn off the light (other than fixing the problem) are to remove the bulb or cut the wires, both of which could create problems if you wanted to sell it or ever needed to get an emissions test done.
It was a 96. I pulled the wire off the neg teminal of the battery and let it sit for about 20 mins. After i put i back on the check engine light is gone. Today is the day that i am trading that damn truck in for a new truck. Thanks for the insight.
