Temp Patch For Sliding Moon Roof
Temp Patch For Sliding Moon Roof
I have a 2017 F350 6.2L Gas 4:30 4x4 Platinum with the Moon Roof option. The truck is used exclusively to either pull a 12,000# boat and trailer on 900 mile round trips four times per year, or I load the 4 Wheel pop-up camper to visit the desert SW. The truck has been flawless since new with exception of the moon roof which I especially like to open up when going through back country canyons, etc.
The moon roof internal rails failed once when I was 200 miles into a new trip. After several hours of prying, etc. I was able to close the roof and continue on my way. The dealership charged $750 to repair when I got back. Some times I'm more than a 1,000 miles from home. If the roof were to fail to close and no amount of prying will work, what could one do to temporarily seal the opening and continue the journey? Duct tape and cheap plastic tarp? Any recommendations?
I carry a spare set of rails (the most common failure), but these can be difficult to install on the side of the road. I also clean and lube the sliding moon roof with the recommended Krytox GPL 205 lubricant.

In 2017, the 6.2L gas engine was standard in the Platinum.
In 2024, one can still get a Platinum with a gas engine, now the 7.3L.
The OP isn't the only one with a Platinum 6.2L.
With that settled, let's turn the conversation back to how to fix a moonroof that won't close, when miles away from home or any dealer.
The Limited is the only trim with the diesel standard. As for the moonroof fix, don’t open it! The last time a tried sliding mine the right corner hung up. I stopped and got it pushed into alignment and open. Then I closed it and left it! I still open the sunshade every now and then. I assumed my rails are broken as is mentioned and I’ve intended to fix it.
as far as a temp fix, the only solution to my situation was to get it closed or cover the whole roof until it was fixed. Dropping the headliner and releasing the motor sounds like the best option, just carry a good ratchet or driver set with a variety of bits and sockets.
