I have done a search already, but no luck. I am going to do the Haynes Manual quick check for timing chain slack, but I am pretyy sure the timing chain needs replacement. (Truck runs great, but pings lightly under load and has occasional rough idle.) I have gone through many things already sensor wise in the truck and have done the full tuneup routine. Still have the occasional miss at idle and I am figuring that the timing chain in the truck is likely original one with 154,000 miles on it. I kind of feel that this may be a bit much for me to tackle with my mechanical skills, and it will take time to do also. Rough numbers, how much would it cost to have the thing done by a reputable shop? (Replace water Pump as well while in there.) Any advice appreciated.
If the timing chain has slack in it and iiiiii'm sure it dose throw it as far as you can this will cause more problems in the long run. you maight want to check your spark plugs and make sure they are all firing. at a shop about $160.00
I would imagine 4 hours shop time charge (here that is $65/hour) plus shop charge for the 3 piece timing set($60), gaskets ($25), and waterpump ($90) plus antifreeze and oil ($40). About $475 sounds like what you might get charged for it. You can get all the parts much cheaper at autozone and spend a day doing it, but it's all relative I guess.
I'm doing mine on Friday. Got the timing set for $40 (double roller) and pump for $50 and gaskets for $15. It's worth it to me to know that I did it right (hopefully)...I don't have a mechanic that I trust by me.
Hope it all works out well...post your experience/results when done.
