Just got a call from a friend who has located a 7.3 with 80,000. Says it has a blown head gasket and posible burned ehhaust valve. Not aware that head gaskets were a problem with 7.3's. Are the valve seats replaceable? If I decide to use this as a replacement for my E350 (see prior post) it will make for the easiest job, but before I do, what other things should I check ?
Not always, but generally if a 7.3 cavitates, it takes the head gasket with it. A USED engine 9 of 10 times generally has falsified mileage. BE CAREFULL.
With only 80k I find it hard to beleive that it has those problems.
my understanding of 'cavitate' is the injector pump is sucking/pumping air instead of fuel. ??
Obviously I have to rebuild, so now;
what other things should I look for during the rebuild?
who's got the best rebuild manual?
where's a good place for parts?
Cavitation is when the cylinders get "pinholes" in them allowing coolant to fill the cylinder resulting in nowhere for the coolant to go except to the weakest part; the head gasket or the connecting rod.
This is a result of not using any supplimental coolant additives. I do suggest you read up on this as you will find it very interesting.
80K is a prime mileage for a pinholed block. That's how many were on the first one we discovered back in the 90s. I've never had to put headgaskets on a 7.3. Not without doing a total rebuild anyhow.
