I have a 1994 Explorer Sport with a 5 speed manual transmission and push button 4WD. When I try to engage 4WD, there is a loud banging as if 4WD is trying to "kick-in", but it will not engage.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. It works fine in 2WD. A friend of mine mentioned something about a solenoid on the transmission that is responsible for engaging the 4WD may be the culprit.
It could be a stuck/dirty shift motor on the transfer case. The "bang" makes me think, though, that it might be the auto-hubs are broken, which doesn't allow power to get to the wheels. This is fairly common for auto hubs.
1st thing I would do, is verify which part of the 4WD drivetrain is failing: transfer case or hubs.
