I have a set of noisy front shocks on my 2000 X. HAs anyone replaced the factory shocks? What do you guys recommend? I just put BF Goodgrich All Terrain Radial 295x75x16 a tornado air management system and a flow master exhaust. I thought I would put an add a leaf 1.5" leveling kit and replace all the shocks. I don't get off road as much as I would like but need the right shock just in case. Your help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I received my V10 badges today and can't wait to install them. Catch you later.
IMO: The 1.5" add-a-leaf setups add too much additional spring rate and stiffens the ride considerably. I did a Rancho add-a-leaf and single RS5000s (295 tires) on an F250 for a guy and it rides terrible. He loves it (I think cuz it's higher), but he hasn't ridden in the F350 that I did using a hanger kit (315 tires)with Bilstein 5100s. That individual ordered what HE wanted despite my recommendations and that's OK. It's just that there is better riding setups available, although they're usually more expensive. Think about how stiff that add-a-leaf has to be to overcome the negative arch of the factory spring pack, plus support the weight of the vehicle. I'm big on hanger kits if you don't need alot of lift, since they retain the factory springs and ride. Bilsteins are the only way to go for shocks and single 5100s will be more than adequate with a hanger kit. Just adding Bilstein OEM replacements to the stock setup will provide an improvement in ride.So what I'm saying is that I wouldn't do the add-a-leaf if you care about the ride. Just my opinion.
I also have a 2000 X, and after reading some reviews on forums and an off road mag, for me it was between bilsteins and doestch. After checking prices I went with doestch(big price difference). I should have them in a couple of days and let you know what I think.
I thought I had a broken shock on the front of my Ex. The noise I kept hearing when I hit a bump was the sway bar. The bushings had gone bad. I had them replaced at one of the local dealerships and the problem was solved, it really firmed up the front end. You may not need shocks!
On another note, I replaced the stock shocks in November with a set of Monroe Reflex. They really helped with the rebound. Dampened the ride without sacrificing smoothness.
