I'm only asking this question because I've looked and found nothing. What are manual transmissions that will fit my 1973 F350 with a 460 FE/FT? One that I could buy new would be best, just so I don't have to tear one out of another car/truck. Do you guys have any recommendations?
As to what transmission, almost any Ford patterned transmission will work with the proper bell housing.
Later ZF 5 speeds will work if they are produced with the 460 bell pattern. Iirc these used an external hydraulic clutch setup and so might adapt to mechanical clutch linkage.
New? Not happening.
Depending on use and axle ratio, T18, T19 and ZF would cover the options.
My truck originally had a C6. Now had a T-19. If you decide to go the same route....you will need a flywheel off a 390...a 351M-400 bellhousing and a matching clutch kit for a 390. I believe it is an 11in clutch. A T-18 will work too behind the aforementioned parts and maybe an NP435 as well but not 💯 sure. If you need a part number for the clutch kit that I bought from Rock Auto, let me know. I'm really happy with the set up.
You can get the 460 bell off of 1983 and newer engines. That will allow the larger clutch. If your engine is a '73 it will be internally balanced, and that's why the 390 flywheel will work.
