1982 F600 project

This is my first time posting on here so not sure if I'm doing this right.......I recently bought an 82 F600 for a project truck, it has the 370 and a five speed trans.... starting the build now, maybe we could compare notes on what fits and what works? I plan to put in a 1992 F250 bench seat (I think it'll bolt right up) also putting on a 2017 F350 bed.

Welcome to FTE.

I gave you your own thread to avoid confusion.

I was concerned with the wheels on that truck, but it appears you are good. See the picture here and the explanation. You need to know your business with those, but they are safe if handled right and you are happy with tube type etc.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post19026198

What fits and what works? Mostly cab parts like doors, glass and some panels are the same as a pickup of the same style. Floors are different, and probably mostly flat where the seat attaches, so you should be able so slide that bench right in there.

Beyond that, nothing interchanges with a pickup. Engines and all running gear is different, suspension etc.

IMO your biggest issue will the ride.

Progress updates LOL

A lot of progress made lately.....she's all one color now, bed mounted, all lights working interior done. cut the front PTO winch and bumper off and remounted the original bumper. This has been economy build from top to bottom, no shop, all outside in the dirt lol.....she's really looking good though and running great. Terrible ride lol but that's to be expected running with no weight in the back.

Have the same truck and considering a similar setup. Right now I have a SRW bed that I'm thinking of using. Problem is my Cab/Axel length is too long for the bed. Did you have to cut your's down or did it come from the factory for an 8" bed? Mine is setup for a 10' bed. I have the gasser 370 as well. Rebuilt the carb and reinstalling that this weekend. I'm not planning on loading it up weight wise and wanted to swap some F350 Axles into the truck to get some Alcoa's the 6 lugs can be hard to find. I did get some 22.5's from a junk yard and got rid of the split rims. I'm just really stuck on the bed right now.

I got lucky with my build...the frame rails were at factory (or at least appeared to be that way) for an 8' bed....I did have to cut about 8" from the end to better fit the 2017 F350 bed on her....that was the only mod I had to do to the frame rails. I have seen similar set ups with the longer frame rails (cab to axle length) and the guy fabricated a "service box" type storage (just a 2' rectangle storage box) that he mounted between the cab and front edge of the bed, that way the stock 8' bed wheel wells lined up right without cutting anything. Mine has been a budget build all the way so I don't plan on changing axles or anything....running gear and ride is a little slow and rough but not because anything is bad, just built for a 20k pound payload but I'm running her with a 400lbs box on the back lol! I may throw a couple of yards of gravel in the bed for weight to see how she rides. Good luck on you build! If I can answer any questions for you, don't hesitate to ask. I put all new door seals and trim...I ordered door seals and trim for an 82 Bronco and everything fit perfect! To include a drivers side floor patch panel. I also put an 82 Bronco carpet in....not a perfect fit, but with a little work (and cursing) it came out pretty good. Also put an 82 Bronco dash panel (cap) on that fit perfectly.

I heard you need an 8" frame to fit the bed on the rails. So the body lines line up? Did you do anything to level the bed or raise it higher?

Body lines

[QUOTE=BadRadDad;21245158]I heard you need an 8" frame to fit the bed on the rails. So the body lines line up? Did you do anything to level the bed or raise it higher?[/QUOTE

I didn't raise the bed at all, I bolted it right to the frame with some 3/4 mounting pads (so it's about 3/4 inch taller), that was it. I figured the body lines between the 2017 bed and the 1982 cab didn't line up anyway so I just tried to get the top body line close. The bottom of the bed is lower than the bottom of the cab (look at the drivers side picture and you can see that "gap".... ignore the rust hole lol).... the passenger side doesn't have that "gap" because the fuel tank is there (again, check the pictures). Also the frame rails on the 1982 are more narrow than the mounting bolt holes for the 2017 bed so I had to mod up some brackets to bolt it up. Also look at the picture from the back end, you can see the bed doesn't come up as high as it should on the rear window....I plan to put a healthy headache track on to visually address that.

Bed lower than cab but the fuel tank masks that some

Bed lower than cab.... gap that I'm not sure how I'll address yet

I didn't want to raise the bed so tall to match the bottom of the cab....i didn't want to see all that frame and running gear....i like the squated look

Bed not as high as it should be.... to the bottom of the rear window.... I'll address that with a healthy headache rack

Truck is looking good. Should be a fun ride.

One thing you should check.....Those sure look like widow maker wheels in the pictures. Don't stand in front of the rear wheels until you know for sure. They can blow apart sitting still. They are especially dangerous when putting air in the tires, and even when driving.

Driving down the road is when one of my rear wheels blew apart. Sounded like a cannon, then the wheel passed me up rolling in the oncoming traffic lane. Luckily there wasn't a car close to me in that lane.

Yep! Thank you and thanks for the heads up and information... not the widow makers and the wheels are actually stamped with a DOT stamp in the steel with a manufacturer date of 2-82...i think the widow makers were banned in 72 (maybe 74?)

That's good. As hard as I looked, I couldn't see a split in the outer ring of the front wheel. That let me think they may be widowmakers.

just a quick update.... added some stake rails to address that need.... simple 2x4 cut to fit the vertice posts and 1x6 pine painted black... pretty simple and low cost but came out pretty good

welcome to FTE.

Check post 7 above. He explains the mounting.

His wheelbase worked with the bed length.

That would be the first thing to check--cab to axle compared to the front of the bed to the center of the wheel wells.
