Hello, new to classic car world but would like to swap some things to bring this truck up to “daily driver” status. I’d like to take leaf springs out and swap motor and transmission, along with interior and put the wood bed back in. My first problem is figuring out what frame/front clip I have. Looking for some tips/tricks into identifying so I could start replacing things. The guy I bought from did nothing to it and all he could tell me was it sits on a Chevy frame and he thinks it has a 70’s front chevel clip. Currently has a sbc with a 350 turbo trans. I’d like to swap to an 80’s 5.0 with a manual trans. But open to any ideas that would better suit the truck. Any ideas welcome. Very app

Thank you for the response! When I bought the truck from the guy last year he told me it sat for a year or so in his garage without moving. I believe the tires have bad belts in them or its steering components that need replacing I just don’t know what front clip it has or how to tell. As far as the drivetrain, I believe the SBC slipped a bearing. I have not pulled the motor yet due to the cold weather but I pulled valve covers and everything seems in tip top shape, I figured when I do pull the motor maybe it would be a good time to swap with a SBF and a manual transmission. I’m somewhat new to working on classics so my biggest question is what I could do and not do. Thank you again for any input!
That is definitely a Chevy suspension . So many of the components are interchangeable on those suspensions.
As far as the tires I don't know which diviots your looking at but it might be as simple as a balance issue. Take them to a tire store and have them checked out.
Ford engines with their front oil pumps don't play well with GM chassis. You're going to be in for quite a time trying to shoehorn a Ford engine in that frame and under the cowl the way the engine is set back. As much as I'm also a 'Ford in Ford' kind of guy, I would strongly suggest leaving it as is. Put some Y-block valve covers on it and call it a day. https://www.ebay.com/itm/17544070039...mis&media=COPY
I'm always curious why people buy full custom rigs like this and immediately want to take them apart and radically change them? What was it about this truck that excited you and made you have to have it?
I have yet to “immediately” tear anything apart. Actually I drove it until the motor slipped a bearing. Seeing how I have to pull the engine to repair or replace I figured why not now, hence the questions of what I could and could not do, and maybe getting help identifying the clip. Either way the end result I was looking for was a ford drivetrain in the truck. But I didn’t know. I was looking for more power as well
I have a SBC in my panel truck and it has more than enough power and wouldn't want to take it to it's limits..if you are going to pull the motor check to see if the distributor can be pulled first for clearance. I have to remove the cap from mine in order to lift the base..
looks just like my truck. I used parts from a 72 chevy, and put in tubular a-arms and coilovers up front from speedtech. Mine came with a 305, and just ordered a blue print 383 with 436hp for it. I wanted to go ford as i am a ford guy... but it would of cost 1k more for the same power... and then had to deal with new mounts and everything. Screw it, chevy motor is going back in.

big help. Thank you for the reply, I will most likely keep Chevy in for now and work on suspension and what not. Truck just needs to be tightened up a bit. I will check what I can do for motor. I’d be happy with 4-450 for sure. Thanks again

I believe I can pull the distributor but I haven’t been in garage, I’ll have to look again. Now that I think of it maybe I to have to pull cap first. I’m a manual guy. Nothing wrong with the turbo 350 I’d rather have 5-6 gears and a bit more power. The sbc I shot right now anyways but if I had to guess it’s only pushing maybe 240-250. Very sharp steering it just needs a makeover due to the fact the previous owner bought it and never really serviced it, then let it sit in the same spot for over a year. As for the interior it’s kinda choppy and made out of wood. I’m doing a lot with my old man so I had plans to buy and make it my own vision. Plus I got it for a steal so I’m not really hurting myself here.
