Over the years I've not thought much about screwdrivers. I work on vehicles a lot, and my screwdriver drawer always has an assortment. Usually Craftsman, Stanley, Lowe's brand, basically whatever. Phillips and slotted, different lengths and sizes. Well, recently I was hunting for a screwdriver and noticed a bunch of my slotted screwdrivers have broken off tips and the phillips ones have a lot of worn flutes.
I do have a few Snap-On screwdrivers, which in my opinion hold up better than some but are nothing special...yet you pay a lot for them. I'm perfectly willing to shell out more money for quality tools, but it needs to be really good quality. I have a number of other Snap-On tools which I think are worth the money, but their screwdrivers never really impressed me.
I just bought a set of PB Swiss, a set of Vessel, and a set of Felo. We'll see how these hold up.
What do you guys think? Just keep buying cheap whatever and replace them as you go? Or spend for better brands and hope they last longer?
I've got Craftsman screwdrivers from the 70's still in my tool box. I prefer Snap-On screwdrivers over all other brands due to one seldom noticed, "special feature" no other screwdriver has, or had at the time. Look closely at the tips of both flat head and phillips, see those grooves, If you don't see grooves, they're worn off or older Snap-On drivers, those grooves help tremendously in keeping a bite on the screw instead of rounding away like many do, especially when they've been tight for a long time.
Yep, I've noticed those grooves on my snap-ons and they likely do help. One complaint I have with some of the craftsmans is that the screwdriver shaft seems to be prone to bend when using it inappropriately as as pry-bar, and the craftsman flat blade units also tend to break their tips the easiest, I think.
I'm so glad I'm not in the private sector any longer that I have to buy my tools. When I was, I think my tool truck bill was more than my 1st house mortgage. Now I use what I have left over from those days and 1 or 5 harbor freight specials. $30 each still isn't bad considering the name and known quality (lifetime warranty). Diamond tipped, makes sense if it's embedded like emery cloth.
Those Snap-Ons are what I have, although I don't have the whole set. Fine screwdriver, just don't seem that special. I'm a fan of Snap-On (I think they are the best of the tool truck brands) but there's no doubt they are overpriced.
