temp gauge barely reading

hi

temp gauge on my 96 f350 doesn't register at all for 10-15 minutes of warm-up/ driving. It will ONLY ever get to the 'N' at most, ever. I replaced the thermostat with no change. off to get a temp. sender?/sensor? one of the two.
My truck has virtually NO power until the engine is warmed up after driving. I'm thinking it has something to do with the EBPV because it feels like a valve opens in two stages about 1-2 seconds apart as I really accelerate (once warm) and then there is full power.
Does the gauge read low and the truck perform poorly because the truck IS cold?, and if so, why does it stay cold so long? Temps have been in the 40's but the problem has been around for a while.
Maybe the oil pressure is off? Recently changed oil. Manual suggested straight 30. anybody using this? Thanks for the help.

Diesels typically take longer to warm up than a gasser, but not as long as you describe yours taking. It's been in the 20's and 30's here overnight, and mine takes about 10 minutes/5 miles to be totally warmed up, with the needle on the "O". Are you getting heat out of the heater, or is it merely the gauge that bothers you?

I have the EXACT same scenerio with my '96 F350. It takes me 10 minutes of idling following by 10 minutes of driving before the heater is blowing even remotely warm air.

Always just thought the 7.3L was slow to heat up. Now I think I am going to replace the t-stat for starters.

I don't think it would be the temp sending unit though?? It would explain the guage reading off but not the cold air coming out of the heater.

One difference though, I don't appear to suffer from any power loss. I just want some heat in the cab!!

Were is the t-stat on my engine?

Follow the large hose from the top of the radiator. It'll lead to the top of the water pump. Directly under the housing at the end of the hose is the thermostat.
