I'm working on my son's 87 bronco II with a 2.9, 5 sp manual fuel injected 4x4. No spark, no fuel pump. Hot wired pump & it runs. New fp relay, new icm, new pick up coil, new ignition coil. Coil has voltage to it. Eng turns over but nothing else. Battery was disconnected so no codes. I'm out of ideas.
If you hot wired it coming out of the FP relay directly to the pump then its either the inertia switch or wiring. You can still pull the codes, see the tech info post for doing the KOEO codes.
My last 2 problems were the distributor's TFI module, and the fuel pump. Scratching my head in confusion at first, my mechanic friend suggested spraying a shot of starter fluid in the intake.
The first time produced no starting, so it was assumed there was no spark. After checking coil and other wiring, the last and most difficult to access was the TFI. When replaced, the engine fired right up.
The next problem, when I used the start fluid, the engine would fire up, but stop running. It was the fuel pump, but a lot of time was wasted testing relays and the wiring.
Both times, it started and ran normally all the to work, but at the end of the day, the engine was dead. No warning or anything.
I'm pretty well convinced from my experiences and from what I read here, that these are the most common problems and fixes when confronted with a "no run" condition.
Next on the list would be the vacuum operated fuel relay and the TPS.
I'm an old mechanic who's a lot more at home working on my 49 Ford F-1 flathead than on the computerized stuff. What's a TFI module and where is it at? Is that the same thing as the ignition module on the distributor? What's the TPS and where is it? Also, what manual/book would you recommend to get a wiring diagram.
The Thick Film Ignition module is on the distributor. The Throttle Position Senser is on the side of the throttle body and has two wires. I like my Ford manuals but they can be $$$$. I have wiring diagrams, what do you need.
I need a diagram showing the ignition and fuel pump circuits. Also, is there a fuse or circuit breaker that could be causing my problems? I've checked all the fuses under the steering wheel. Are there any other fuses in the Bronco that I haven't found?
I replaced the TFI on the distributor. Still no fire.
