Factory Receiver

Has anyone removed the factory receiver on an Excursion? I bought mine used, and the receiver is missing. There is one on e-bay I'll probably buy, but I was wondering what is involved in installing it. I took a look under the truck today, and I see the bolts it mounts to. The only problem is that it looks like you might have to drop the gas tank to get to the nuts on the inside of the frame rails. Any idea?

I too, saw the one on ebay and wondered why in world anyone would remove it? Maybe yours is the one it was removed from!

The hitch is integral to the 'blocker beam' design that helps prevent smaller cars from running up underneath in a collision.

Good question. I bought mine used, and I knew it was in a minor rear-end collision. Fine with me, since I knew about it before I bought it, and it was a gret deal. My guess is that the body shop removed it, and just never put it back on.
I guess I won't have to worry about anyone bidding against me. Who else would need one? Just trying to find out how bad it's going to be to install it.

I heard it was a pain to remove the trailer hitch receiver because I still need to remove mine. I also bought my 2000 Excursion used and the bracket for the trailer lights connector was snapped off. Apparently the bracket is only attached with one bolt which is secured from the top down so there is no way I can drill to get an EZ-out on the broken stud. I don't have a trailer or anything to pull so I don't think I will ever try to install the bracket.

As for installing an OEM trailer hitch just ask an after market installer what's involved. I assume a Draw-Tite trailer hitch system will have the same difficulties. But, since the trailer hitch receiver is standard on the Excursion you might get lucky and find the attachment nuts pre welded to the in side of the frame rails. Take a close look at the mounting holes to see if there are weld nuts installed on the inside.

Update - just installed the receiver. It can be done without dropping the tank, since the nuts are welded to the backing plates. It would be a whole lot easier with the tank ot of the way, but that just wasn't feasible in my driveway, with a full tank, alone.
At least now my truck looks complete - just in time for boating season.
