I just had a problem with my 97 f-150 4.2L. It does not idle when cold, it either dies or you have to give it gas and let it run rich, but then when you get moving, and warm it up it runs good.
I had it hooked up to a computer and was told that I had a series of things wrong. (PCV valve, O2 sensor, IAC sensor, and the MASS air flow sensor) this is a pretty big list to all happen at once. I know the O2 sensor is bad, but will the IAC sensor trip others in this line? once done wiht the diagnostics the thing runs fine, is it a fluke? I am also going to change the pcv valve on my own, but if I change the IAC will that take care of the rest of the problem?
any help or advice you can give would be great.
viewing other previous chats, I have noticed that this has come up before, ( mostly going back to the simple PCV as a problem).

You might try cleaning the MAF with some carb cleaner. If they get dirty, they will give false air flow readings to the computer.
The IAC's are common for going bad over time too. You may be able to remove it and clean it, but replacing it is usually your best bet.

THanks for the info,
am going to replace the IAC today and PCV valve, will dismantle and clean (if possible) MAF tommorrow with replace of bad o2 sensor, thanks for the info again, just seems as you look at teh message board the 4.2L has reoccuring problems with its air intake system, is there any modifications to this system that will eliminate some of the sensor issues (better air cleaner, parts etc?)?
I'm not sure, My Windstar has basically the same Split Induction intake system on it and I have to clean the MAF about once a year or it doesn't run right either.

You may want to check the hose that connects the PCV valve to the intake plenum. That hose is right under the IAC valve. I had similar problems and just replaced the hose and cleaned out the PCV valve... Your IAC may not even be bad but because your idle is not good, the trouble code gets activated.....Its kinda hard to replace but with some patience and knuckle grease, you'll get it done...Hope that helps..
