Ford Excursion V10 stalling in reverse only when backing downhill.
I have a 2000 ford excursion V10, and recently it’s been stalling in reverse. It started when I was towing a camper down a very steep mountain road, and was engine braking in first gear for about 10 minutes. I have a digital temp gauge and have never gone over 220 degrees. It doesn’t happen all the time, only when I am backing down a hill (front tires above rear tires) with no load on the engine. If I am aimed uphill when I back up, I can sit there with my foot on the brake forever and it won’t stall. If I am on the same road but turned around so I am aimed downhill when I back up, it will stall within 2 seconds. Any ideas for this? The trans fluid level looks good but the dipstick is hard to read. I have about 136k miles. Had a trans fluid drain and fill and filter replaced at about 125k miles.
Is this condition fuel level dependent? Same thing happens no matter the fuel level?
yes, I usually keep it over a half tank and haven’t noticed any changes. This does happen less when it’s fully warmed up, but has still occasionally happened.
Do you have the original Ford stamped steel transmission pan?
If not, which aftermarket transmission pan do you have, if you know?
When you checked your transmission fluid level, was your engine running?
What EXACT transmission fluid did you use when you drained and refilled it at 125K miles?
(Be very specific with your identification of transmission fluid, including the name brand, and a link to the product online so that the specifications can be seen)
When you pulled your old transmission pan filter, did you also retrieve the old O ring for that old filter from the orifice in which the top of the filter is inserted, prior to installing the new filter?

Hello, thanks for the detailed reply. Yes I have the original trans pan. I checked the fluid level running in neutral with parking brake on, trans was warmed up maybe 150 degrees. For trans fluid I used 17 quarts motorcraft mercon V (part number XT5QMC as I saw recommended after tons of research. And yes, I made sure to remove the old o-ring on the filter that’s on the top of it before using the new one. I used a Wix filter as I’ve always heard good things about them. Since the fluid change I was towing ann RV- around 8000 pounds near constantly, all over the Rocky Mountains and in very hot places like Utah and Arizona. Everything else has been perfect except for this stalling in reverse.
