motor swap
i have a 78 f-150 with a 351m would i have any trouble dropping in a 390? what will match up and what wont? just a thought, i founf out i have access to a easialy rebuildable 390. so well see were it takes me....thanks in advance

This has been discussed many times so you will find a lot of info using the search function. The only engines that will bolt directly to your tranny are the 400, 429, 460. Bell housings are available to swap in other engines.

The bell housing is different. I would look for a 460 to put in place of the 351m.
You can buy mounts from L and L products that will work with your engine perches if you go with a 460, and your bell housing will bolt up too.

I replaced the 300 in my '79 with a 390 almost a year ago. Everything said previously is true, the FE blocks are a little different than anything offered in '78-'79. I made the swap fairly easily in one weekend, but I had a complete donor truck to rob parts off of. Almost everything under the hood had to come off of the old truck because the 300 stuff (power steering, etc) wouldn't fit on the 390. I was extremely happy with the results though!
