I'm cobbling together a motor from a few different trucks and I'm wondering if the brackets and balancer from a 302 will go on a 351w. The 302 is in a 84 with v-belt and the 351 is from a 97
Even if you get one from a 302, set the engine up on TDC #1 and then bolt the pointer to the engine and then hold the balancer up temporarily with the keyway in the neighborhood and see if the TDC 0 is close to the pointer. They moved the pointer around in different years, so it's easy to get a combination where you can't time the engine. Unless you get one of those sticky tapes and stick around the balancer and change where TDC is located.
Also around the early 70's, they went from a 3 hole balancer to a 4 hole balancer to retain the pulley on the balancer.
And last but not least, they changed the balance of the 302 around 1981. Before that they were 28 oz inbalance like the 351w. In 1981 they went to a 50 oz inbalance, the 351w stayed at 28oz.
