I have a 1997 F250 Hd with a 351W and a E40d trans.
The problem is when i don't warm the truck up the and drive off it will back fire and rev high and not engage but i can get some engagement when i lightly tap the throttle when moving but as soon as it warms all the way up the truck runs fine and doesn't skip a beat
but if i do warm it up and not move it. it drives completely fine like nothings wrong
it has no problem stating in the mourning but when i stop and let it cool for a bit it has a little trouble but always starts
I really have no idea where to start and don't really want to just start throwing parts at it
I have new plugs that are less then a year old same with wires and rotor cap the last owner put a new fuel pump in before he sold it to me and has a less then a year old torque converter that i put in and the trans fluid is still fresh looks and smells good
i don't even know where to start looking
Check for codes, check the fuel pressure, check the charging voltages, check the fuel pressures, check the ignition timing, smoke check the engine for vacuum leaks, check for any loose connections, etc.
If you do not have the skills or tools to do those checks, I would focus your attention on finding someone that does. Not all mechanics can work on cars, let alone older ones. Finding the right one will save you a lot of money.
After working through the obvious culprits in previous post; you need to investigate and rule out the EGR system. If malfunctioning, it could lead to the issues you described. It works more on a colder engine as well, and will affect spark timing regardless if it's functioning properly or not.
You will need a volt meter, diagnostic code puller, and vacuum pump to test the system.

Good luck
I will definitely check the other things but should i start with yours the last owner removed the cat and I have not been able to remove the o2 sensors to check it. it's almost welded in there and since I posted has begun to have little back fires while hot nothing crazy but going down the highway can hear it every once in a while
