Hey yall. I have a 91 f150 i6 manual 4x. Under 100,000 miles. Today when trying to take ole girl for a drive she wouldn’t shift into reverse or any gear what so ever without grinding everything to crap. When I try to put it in reverse the shift lever seems to not want to go into its correct position for reverse. Once it gets close even with the clutch compressed it will grind a lot. It will go into reverse and the truck will back up but you’ll have to make your self look like a baboon doing so. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Yes first grinds too! But reverse grinds even with the clutch compressed. I can get the truck into first from fourth no problem but from neutral i have to jam it in which inevitably makes a little grind noise. Trans fluid is good.
You need to add some Dot 3 brake fluid to your clutch master cylinder. In case you are not familiar with it, the clutch master cylinder is just inward of the the brakes master cylinder. The lid screws off like a jar lid and there is a rubber cup under the lid that has to be removed before adding fluid.
Again Dot 3 brake fluid and don't forget to remove the rubber cup before adding fluid.

that’s embarrassing! Thank you very much. She’s shifting like butter now
is a new clutch master cylinder in my near future then?
Actually I would guess you probably have a leaky clutch slave cylinder. It could be a leaky clutch master cylinder though. You will probably have to add some brake fluid from time to time, hopefully you have a slow leak where ever it is. Hopefully your slave cylinder doesn't completely fail due to leakage as you have to remove the transmission to replace the slave cylinder. I have plenty of experience how they act with my '88F-150.
Synchros are gone.
in neutral double pump clutch , put in second then first or reverse.
actually first and reverse don’t have synchros?
you gotta stop every thing from spinning.
i always use to put in second, before first or reverse. Maybe?
No. The wear is the clutch. Not the master cylinder.
understood. Pardon my ignorance in this subject. Regarding fluid level. I only had to put about three caps worth of the fluid in before it was too full. Seemed like a very small amount to me.

Did you read post #8?
Both a worn clutch and a leaking slave cylinder could be to blame for the low fluid level in the master cylinder. Especially with 100K miles on what could be the original clutch.
