Hi all,
I am ready to do the next upgrade on our Excursion, V10 but was wanting a little feed back on what others had installed and how they worked out.
Did it live up to your expectations? Was there any performance improvments like HP, Mileage, Sound? What about cost and how easy was it to do the install?
Thanks Gene
Gene, have you looked down in the V10 forum? Look at the post entitled "guess I'll go first" by yours truly. A user by the name of wawii has a Banks Powerpack on his V10. He's got Dyno charts plus some wav. files so that you can hear what it sounds like. Now, I don't know if your going with Banks. I can't even think straight as I sit here and burn up in jealousy . You see my wife said no engine modifications until I buy her a Supercrew. I can now only live vicariously through all you LUCKY guys that get to modify your trucks. It's kinda like m*sturb*tion, it kinda feels ok but it just ain't the same. Just jokin' boys....Hope that topic can help you.
Hey rdl1320, were did you get your V10 Borla headers for $530? They are listed on Borla's web site for $800 which now I assume that must be the MSRP. Did you get the Borla cat back system also?
I've got a Powerpack on my Ex. Very noticible power increase (and interior noise level). I was very pleased with the qualty of the parts, and the fit and installation. I had a couple minor problems with shipping damage and getting corrections from Banks done right the first time.
The noise issue is a subjective one. May not be a problem with some, but compared to the quiet provided by the stock (i.e. restrictive) exhaust, it is apparent. I think the truck system, being that the muffler does not sit below cabin space, does not resonate through the passenger comp. Banks must have recognized this, as the muffler for the Excursion model of the Powerpack is a different P/N.
I bought some material called Whispermat from a place in Mass. that is 1/4" closed cell foam bonded to 1/8" loaded vinyl sheet with adhesive backing. I gutted the interior and applied the material to the entire floor pan. It has helped reduce the cabin noise and vibration.
Ebay has a pair of Borla headers up for auction, unless they've expired. Guys that have these seem to be pleased with them.
I just bought the Borla headers a few weeks ago (already had a Borla catback system installed). They list for $677.95 at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com in their catalog.
When I called and asked for a price on the phone they sold them to me for $575.24.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Feb-02 AT 08:35 AM (EST)]Thanx for the feed back, I'll need to bookmark that web site but it sounds like calling in the order is a better way to go.
Hey mrrottndog, how did the interior sound of your Borla cat back system compare to the stock system? I'm assuming you have the V10 since you bought the Borla headers, how did the sound change after you installed them? Also, did you notice any MPG and/or performance increase?
Hey monsta, thank you for the good review. I didn't know what the little stars were for.
It has a deeper throatier sound since installation of the catback system. But if your looking for loud 'they are not'. I have not installed the headers yet. I'll let you know!
Great, that's just what I'm looking for because I still need to keep my Excursion family friendly. I was inspecting the exhaust system clearances on my vehicle to see how easy the headers would be to install and every thing looks good. Headers can be very painful to install for some application but there seems to be plenty of room on the V10.
I'm looking forward to hearing all about your installation and the outcome.
I finally got fed-up with the wimpy sound of my Borla cat-back. I took the advice of several other posters: I drove into a muffler shop 400 miles from home and had them EXTRACT the Borla muffler and button it up with a corresponding 3" straight pipe. INCREDIBLE! Deep, deep, deep and subliminally bassy at idle. On throttle at 3000RPM and above, it sounds like an orchestra performer blowing intensely hard simultaneously through a multitude of French horns, like an instrument. It actually reminds me of my 1976 Kawasaki KZ-900 when I removed that baffle from the KerKer header. I experienced the same astonishment, as well as the same feeling that I was "getting away with having done something that ought not be done." I've been in close proximity to several police cruisers without incident. You have to just give it a tiny, tiny bit of throttle. In an elevated gear at a low RPM, however, too much throttle evokes an overtone which sounds like wasting water rushing down a channel. I cannot believe that I acquired this sound. I was so happy that I let the mechanic who cut out the Borla muffler keep it.
