I have seen several posts about 11-16 axles into older trucks, but has anyone put an older axle under an 11-16? Got a good deal on an 04 rearend and need to get my truck moving. Even if it could just work until I get the 11' axle rebuilt.
Off the top is the speed sensor is in pumpkin on pre-11, and out at the wheel post 11, so speedo isn't going to work maybe? I think the ebrake cables might be different too. what happened on the 11 axle that has you wanting to do a heavy swap
Play, where? Is there more than a 1/16th of a turn on the pinion when the wheels are on the ground? i.e. is the pinion to ring worn. Lift one side in park or gear, and turn the tire, is there alot of play there? like the splines into the carrier are worn? Or is it a rough, grinding kind of noise, mostly in the turns? If so change the diff fluid first and be sure it has friction modifier in it for posi or limited slip differentials.
If your gears and axles are good its way easier, and cheaper, to replace the carrier, pinion, or hub bearings on the axle than screw around trying to roll yours out and a new one in and screw around with lines and cables, rebuild brakes, etc.
Off the top of my head there is little to no play in the pinion but I will have to check. In park with one wheel off the ground you can turn the tire and then feel it kinda catch and slip on both sides. When driving it doesn't grind at all but it will make a pop super loud like your banging two pieces of metal together.
Just guessing here but it sounds like maybe the clutches in the LSD are shot, you should not be able to turn a tire with the other tire on the ground and truck in park or gear, a little shuck back and forth due to slop in gears and splines but to turn, catch/slip that sounds like its in the carrier. Even a e-locker shouldn't do that even if its not activating. Pull the cover and replace the carrier, a new trutrac is like 500 and no clutches to wear out again, plus 60 in carrier bearings. a used LSD should be under 200, e locker is about 550 new.
