So as expected I have found a new issue with the turd. I recently ended up in some mud crossing the pipeline that runs through my property.was completely stopped, got out and locked my hubs and engaged 4H on my 2000 f250 sd... nothing happened. Switched to 4L and when I let out the clutch BAM!! it sounded like someone hit the bottom with a sledgehammer but it pulled out of the mud easily. Everything I have found so far is about newer trucks and iwe's but those weren't out til 04... my previous 4x4s were dodges and haven't had this issue before. Any suggestions?

sounds like it wasn’t totally locked in and slammed in
Was sitting completely still, in natural. After locking it in I shifted to 2nd and let out on the clutch... loud bang and pulled out, only did it at the very first then did fine
If you have a switch to engage/disengage 4wd I would assume you need to put the trans in neutral, shift to 4wd H, wait to hear it click in (faint click) then you can switch it to 4wd L and wait for the click. It is quite possible that clutch in and in a gear you will not get the xfer case to move the shift forks into proper place and when the clutch came out it then turned the xfer case main shaft, everything slammed into alignment and engaged. I remember my first plow truck (87 f-350, 5.7, aod i think), i could shift into and out of 4H while moving, stopped, but all it took was 1 time, stopped in gear, shifting too far into 4L and the second that brake was released it made a NASTY noise from the trans. Only had reverse after that (think it was the internal shift rod on the valve body, broke this rod in 3 pieces). There is a sequence these things need to do it right.
The hubs can be sticky. Always engage them before you think you'll need them to avoid the shafts from spinning, while hubs are still disengaged, then the hubs smacking into place while drivetrain is spinning.
Anytime you engage 4wd its always best to roll/ease the system until your sure its all engaged and locked up. My mile marker manual hubs always CLUNK solid when they align and engage, hate to see what would happen if I gave her the onion right off the bat and those slam in at mach 1.
