Ok first off, 90 bronco 300 six about 187000 miles. As of my last oil change, 2 days ago the six has had mean rattle at start up after it sits over night. It only last of a few seconds but has never done it before. The wierd part is it only did it after the oil change. What do you guys think?
What type of oil filter did you use, some have flaky valves that allow oil to drain out of the filter and galleries thus causing rattles for a few seconds at startup.
Maybe try a different brand filter and switch old for new
Sounds like oil filter drainback syndrome. Usually caused by installing the orange fram oil filters with lousy anti drain check valves. Other brands could possibly cause this affliction also. The cure? Replace with a motorcraft or other known quality brand filter. I use only motorcraft FL-1A's in my 300. They are a sure thing that can be found at any store. I know the check valves work in those, and they are good filters to boot. About the same as a purolator. In fact, I've heard they are nearly identical.
I had this problem with an orange fram once. It was ok for a day or so until the truck sat for a long time. I thought my oil pump cratered at first. I'd never seen an engine take so long to start pumping oil, even after an oil change..I'll never stick another one of those on my engine. I've never had the problem with the FL-1A. You can change the filter without dumping the oil. Just add a bit to replace whats in the old filter. I wouldn't wait to do this, if indeed it's the filter. Most engine wear is at startup even with good pressure. No pressure? No good. MK
BTW, you can search this in the oil forum for more opinions...they are o-plenty...
