Shifter problems

The truck is a 1992 f250 with the 7.3 idi and the e4od trans.

have had the truck for awhile but has Been sitting for about 4 years but was started and driven every 3 months or so for the first 3 ish years just to keep it going. So recently I’ve been Working on it to get it roadworthy. And have ran into a problem the I just can’t figure out. The shifter is very sloppy forward and back but not up and down. It also seems to be sitting closer to the dash than normal. But the main problem is that when in park it easily falls out with just a slight tap and also shifts without pulling the shifter towards you or pressing the brakes.

if anyone has had this problem before or knows what’s wrong your knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Your shift tube has worn and or the bushings (plastic) under the U caps
The shift lever itself goes into a rectangular slot in the shift tube with a piece of rubber
That chunk of rubber in there that is worn out on yours (controls the forward movement) (slop) in the lever
Remove the shrouds and drop the column down some to inspect and repair your column (let the steering wheel rest on the seat)
Remove the little wire for the PRNDL indicator before dropping the column down (or it will break)
Good luck

would this also be causing not having to apply the brakes or pull back on the shifter to shift?

There is no shift interlock on a 1992 model year truck.
