Went for a trip this weekend was on the highway and cruise would not work at all!!!! In thing quick to check for besides fuses? What relay in the PWD do I check?
You may want to check the cruise control switch assembly, it's a valve-like unit mounted next to the brake fluid reservior. It signals the cruise control system that the brake is engaged so it shuts it off. Mine was leaking fluid and it cost $25 to replace.
There's no relay - the power goes straight thru the ignition switch to the cruise servo, which is mounted near the L hood hinge. There's also power going thru the red pressure switch screwed into the front of the brake master cylinder - that switch should be closed (same voltage on both sides; no resistance) at all times, except when the pedal is pushed. They sometimes fail, so check it.
The other common failure is metal filings building up on the ABS sensor in the rear differential. Pull the sensor straight out of the top of the axle housing and clean the tip with a rag. Then check the 2 wires that run from it along the frame up to the firewall. They can snag if you run over small trees.
Mine quit working when my center (third) brake light burned out. The cruise module looks for a specific range of resistance in the brake light circuit. A burned bulb can cause the resistance to be outside of the tolerance.
Also check the cable (from actuator to throttle boddy) They are prone to failure.
If all else fails, get the Ford Service CD -- you can find them on Ebay for ~$10. It provides very detailed troubleshooting procedures.
Thanks for the advice I need to check all those things as soon as possible. My Brake light had come on and I was losing some brake fluid somewhere maybe that is the problem. Will check under the hood for the servo and other things. I just wanted to rule out any relays because the garage that worked on it last switched relays around and thought they solved the problem with the no start situation I had which was the DIP Sensor all along and they would not listen wanted to try easy things first which makes sense and saves cash.
my 95 e.b. also lost cruise control and it turned out to be the cruise control srevo..very easy to replace, bought wholse from ford parts for 140.00, just un plug and plug in..hope this helps
I know on my 1984 Bronco there is a sensor that is inline with the speedometer cables. The cable goes from the xfer case to the sensor and another cable goes to the speedo in the truck. I would check that sensor it should be under your hood under the master cylinder.
Steve should there be brake fluid on the harness for the red switch on the Master Cylinder? and do I unplug harness and test for voltage on the switch or do I remove the switch to test it, looks like it is easy to remove it is threaded into the front of MC? Also, how do you know if the servo is bad?
Hmm... no... brake fluid on anything isn't good...
As far as testing the Speed Sensor that connects between the two speedo cables. As far as my 1984 goes.. you should measure 40 ohms resistance, if it is shorted then it is shot....
