I'll start off by saying I caused the problem I'm having at the moment. Reason being that sometimes I could only pump about 8 to 10 gallons of gas at a time on an empty tank before the pump would auto shut off. So I would push it one or two gallons more. Now when I go fill the gas up I don't get auto shut off at all and the van will die out about a block or two away from the station. It won't start sometimes without the gas cap off and even then its a hard idle and will die out after a minute or two of driving.
Now my problem is this. I've looked around my entire van for a charcoal canister because I was thinking that's the issue that I most likely ruined it but it doesn't seem to have one. Would anyone happen to know if there is an evap control valve or something I could replace on top of the gas tank for that year of van? Would appreciate the advice a lot before I drop the gas tank. Or perhaps you can think of something else I might be overlooking? Ill be ordering a new gas cap first but I don't think it would effect it that severely? Maybe it would. I don't know.
Should be round, on the passenger side, has a tube that connects to the back of the air cleaner, I plugged all mine off, lines were rotten, even tossed my return fuel line, capping it off, check there is a line dead center in the top of the tank, should be the vent.
The rollover vent valve is maybe just stuck
There is a steelie inside it
Remove the valve from the tank and shake it
Try to free up the little steelie inside and once it rattles reinstall it
Being a 1970 you may need a new one and a tank sealing grommet
On just about every Ford tank forever, should be able to find one pretty easy if you need a new one
Hmm checked all around the passenger front side, along the rail to the front, and couldn't find a charcoal canister, I really don't think it has one. This van has a oil breather rather than a air cleaner with one line coming in from the engine.

Top of the gas tank
I'm thinking the line towards the bottom of the pic goes to the filler neck and the top one goes into the the back railing but is just stuffed in there. I think that's the vent valve? Do you know if valve twists off or does the entire base have to be unscrewed? If that elbow comes out I might be able to stick my hand up there and twist it off without removing the gas tank.
By the way I'd like to thank ya both for replying. It's hard for me to find info about certain things about this van but love it too much to get rid of it.

I miss mine, was totaled, put a dash cam in it, yes you may not have the Cali emissions on yours, but you will have the vent in the center of the top of the tank, not sure how it'll he hooked up, check your vent pipe going up to the fill, mine was rotten, may as well get ready to replace your fill pipe, look at Napa for that one, onther parts stores don't carry it.
