The biggest difference between the NP205 (part time) and the NP203 (full time) is the NP 205 is all gear driven where the 203 is chain driven. Another difference is that the 203 has a lower geared low range than the 205.
In case you didn't know, the NP205 is damn near bullit proof. The 203 is almost as tough, but not quite.
Now I know what I have and I know the difference between the 205 and 203. But I still don't understand what the 203 (full time) does that the 205 (part time) does'nt?
Another one, with the year of my truck and the NP 205 does that mean that my manual transmission is a NP 435?
The NP203 is in 4wd all the time. They don't have a 2wd selection. So because of that they are referred to as "full time". A 203 can be converted to part time 4wd but it's not all that common.
The NP205 can run in either 2wd or 4wd, hence the term "part time".
As far as your transmission goes, yes as a general rule of thumb most all NP205 equipped trucks came with the NP435. There was a thread here awhile back about this and there seemd to be a few exceptions though. You can easily verify which tranny you have by looking for the tag on the passenger side of the tranny. It is bolted to the side cover and is about 2" long. At the end of the first line of numbers it will say 435 if its a NP435. Most likely that's what you have.
olford. the 208 case is found after 80. it's a chain driven case like the 203, but works like 205. from the people I know who has them they haven't had any trouble with them. Even though they have the lower Lo i still stick to my np205. If I remember right the BW 1345 and 1356 has the same low Ratio, but don't quote me on that.
