The Milkshake Machine! 99 E350 5.4
This vehicle came from an auction, I know absolutely nothing about its history.
-Was listed as a non-runner. (It runs)
-The oil dipstick was Way over full and the coolant gas bottle was sludged up and empty.
spent the afternoon flushing both the crank case and the cooling system.
The engine runs, no bow by in the crank case and no detectable pressure in the cooling system. No smoke from the exhaust pipe.
Good oil pressure, doesn't overheat while idling. (Total run time was over 90 minutes.)
So... this is the first 5.4 I've ever laid hands on. Can't say I know much about them other than what they are famous for. (spitting out plugs and cam phasers and what not).
Classic signs of a head gasket failure but is there another possibility? Oil cooler? Cracked intake or something like that?
Odometer shows just over 91,000 miles
100% of all e series vans that had the 5.4 are all 2 valve, none even up to date have recived 3v
Thermocure flush
new headgaskets
new timing chain, oil pump, guides, followers, butterfly under plenum,
there is an oil cooler but it never fails like that but worth an investigation.
its a cast block, by the time you get into the valve followers, you are 20 minutes of work to pull the heads. do it.
Does it have an oil cooler?
Look at the oil cooler, the coolant transfer ones (instead of the air to oil ones) can put coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant
It might have a cracked head that will show up when hot
That is why to check the spark plug wells for coolant
