Just finished a 302 to 351w swap into my 1989 F250, 4x4, M5OD.
The engine came out of a 1990 E350 with autotranny.
I also swapped computers.
After the swap, the truck started up on the first try. It will run good for about 3 or 4 minutes, then it will start bucking. If I let off the clutch and coast, it stops and runs OK again.
A mechanic friend suggested that there might be an issue with using a computer out of an automatic in a truck with a manual tranny.
I WOULD RECOMMEND U GET A STANDARD ECM FOR THAT AND GIVE IT A TRY BECAUSE THERE ARE DIFFERENT PERAMETERS INSIDE FOR SPEED AND ENGINE LOADS.......WHAT AUTO TRANY DID THE ECM COME FROM???????PLEASE REPLY FOR SUGGESTION
You have to have a computer specifically for automatic or manual. I've heard of many instances of people running the stock 5.0 computer on a 5.8 with no problems, but I don't have any first hand experience with that.
Doesn't the 5.0l have a different firing order than the 5.8l? I was under the impression that you couldn't just interchange the two computers. Or maybe you just need to swap the plug wires to the proper order in order for it to work? Or maybe I'm smokin' too much crack? I dunno, hopefully someone more knowledgable will chip in...
I put in a mustang A9L puter in my 92 for a maf conversion. I had to change some pinouts on the factory harness to match the mustang eec. If the van had a E40d you will need to get a maual EEC or one for an AOD. Check the wiring diagram from the van adn your truck.

Yes, the firing orders are different. But since the trucks use batch fire injector sequence, there is no need to change anything there. The plug wires would have to be changed to correspond with the new firing order. I'd try the old computer before I did anything else. I think that since the computer from the van is for an automatic, that is where your problem lies.
