I rolled my truck today & beat the cab all to hell. (pics in gallery)
Body man said he could more or less cut the top off the cab (from the bottom of windshield) & weld a new top on. Is that worth it or just easier to install a new cab & swap all my new interior over?
Also the bed is beat up, but it can wait. I was wondering what beds will fit with a 1988 F-150 4X4 with duel tanks. I was hopefully thinking flareside or styleside ~ but I may just put a flatbed on there.
If insurance is picking it up they are just gonna want to replace the roof, but it is still a lot of work. Have to remove headliner and interior trim and glass, cut off roof, align and weld in new one, do bodywork, prep and paint, then put all glass and interior back in. If your paying for it yourself and since you said your bed is bad too, I would look for a good body and frame cheap and swap your drivetrain in it. Doing all that work and painting it isn't gonna be inexpensive, you might be able to find a good body and frame for less.
I don't think I need a frame, it did'nt have the speed or momentum to twist it (I don't think,I made a mistake while offroading in a sand pit).
Insurance is out of it, hell if they knew where I was when it rolled they would probally drop my coverage.
I found another cab for $350.00 but haven't looked at it so I don't know if it is rusted to hell or not & would'nt it be difficult to swap all the interior peices it the trucks also.
okay, thats cool. The only reason I said complete body is because you said you needed a bed too and didn't know you already might have a cab. Thought maybe you could find a good body that didn't need anywork for a decent price with a busted drivetrain. The labor time just to replace a roof panel is 11 hour and 3 hours refinishing, so times 14 times 45 bucks an hour labor is just the start, then add in yet for paint and materials and any extra painting or bodywork. I would get an estimate first and compare price and see if you don't wanna take the time to swap the cab. Shouldn't be all that hard just time consuming. Gonna have to remove the bodybolts and probably stuff like steering and pedals, stuff bolted to firewall and core support(radiator), wiring.Probably best to pull the engine if not anything going from the engine to the body. Then when you have everything disconnected find a way to lift the body high off the frame and set two 4x4s under the cab and something like big barrels on the ends of the 4x4 and let the body down on the 4x4 and roll the frame out from beneath the cab. Or you could find a few big friends. Then since you got that much time in it might as well do the rest of the bodywork yourself and prep it and just have someone paint it. The interior pieces wont be too bad, most are just held on by clips or screws. The seats should be just a few bolt. worst would be the dash, have to find where it is bolted drop down steering column (two bolts?)and disconnect wiring. Look for a good manual for your truck to help you.
