292 Idle problems

new 292 with about 15000 miles was running very well then was brought to me hardly running I have replaced the points and gapped then at .015 set the timeing and cleaned and re-assembeld the carb it starts and runs fine until I go to 2500- 3000 and hold for a few min. then it will not hold idle. The plugs are new and gapped at 35 the cap and roter are new.

Some thoughts, Is the timming returning to base timming when you let off the trottle? Maybe it is staying advanced? You can check it with your timming light. maybe you have a broken or missing spring in your dissy. I have not had much luck gaping the pionts with a feeler guage the dwell meter is the best way to set them IMO. You could still be having a fuel problem it is hard to tell tell us some more info.

It sounds like you are running too rich. When you run the engine at 2500-3000 your plugs fowl up and then it idles poorly. Wait. if you let it cool down for a little while after having driven it at 2500-3000 and then start it up again how does it idle? I agree with 57 ford about using the dwell meter rather than a feeler gauge although the shop manual does say that you can use a feeler guage to set the dwell when installing new points. Check the dwell with a dwell meter to see if you are right there. What happens if you let the engine cool and then start it again?

What year dizzy? After mid 58 Ford did away with the ball bearing advance plate (57-mid58) and went with a cheap bushing. This could be corroded or gummed up. It would be easier and cheaper to just get a new $51 dizzy from Advance Auto; this has the O ring seal and is the same as the 1965 Ford replacement unit.

If it is a Lodomatic dizzy then the diaphram could be the culprit.

THANK YOU GUYS VERY MUCH Let me add that this engine is a marine model And that the distributer seems to be advancing way to far but is returning to the base timeing when the throttle is released. the mixture screws are out 1 1/2 turns Back to the dizzy How far should they advance? this one is going clear off the marks on the wheel. I seem to remember that they made several different springs for them

NOW he tells us! Is this still a marine application?

If that dizzy was designed for the dual carb marine intake that used 1 bbl sidedraft Carters then all bets are off if you are trying to use it in a vehicle application.

You still havent answered WHAT YEAR parts are we talking about!
Do you have a part # off the dizzy and WHAT carb are you using?

PLEASE supply adequate info, dont make me plead for one piece at a time. I have to do that with my kids but one good smack usually works
