I have poor quality repro outside door handles on my 66. Drivers side door handle button sticks in and won't spring back--making door very hard to open--requires lots of pressure on the button to open the door. I figure I need to replace.
I've been reading several threads about door handles and where to not to buy them---but what's the consensus for where to buy the best replacements? Dennis Carpenter? Or NOS/ebay original?
I got a good price on eBay on NOS ones and bought them, at a time I wasn’t really in need of them, so I bought them and stashed them away.
I’m convinced that had I been in real need, they’d have cost me an arm and a leg. If you can get a good price, you can’t go wrong with NOS.
While Carpenter’s stuff was once top notch for everything they re-popped, more recently there stuff gets mixed reviews: some is as good as ever, other is not too good. But I haven’t heard anything negative about their door handles.

I found no difference in DC's handles and the originals except DC's weren't worn out.
Have you removed the latch mechanism and inspected it carefully? Most often the problem with doors being hard to open or impossible to lock with the key is wear in the latch mechanism. This is a picture of one that is severely worn making the button run out of travel before it disengages the pawl and blocking the lock.
These latches are re-popped, or you can weld up the worn area where the arrow is and make it work again if that is all that's wrong with it. 65 F100 door latch
