1962 factory primer color question
Does anyone know what color primer was used on 1962 F100’s? Looking to replicate factory specs on my Rangoon red - Corinthian white longbed hood which has lost almost all its factory paint. Looks to be gray on the sides under what’s left of the white, but Chevrolet did different primer color on the hood vs body/cabs, so I wanted to make sure Ford didn’t do something similar.
Also, - it seems like the whole body was painted white, the red then applied over the top, is that correct?
It’s a California built truck if that makes any difference.

I would definitely say that is the original paint. The mirrors suggest it may have had some time of camper on it at one time. Here is some good reading on an original paint '62, the primer is discussed around post #69 The color of the primer may have been color specific, I've seen some brown primer on other colors. 1962 F250 with factory 262 inline 6 - Page 2 - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com)

Here's a nifty forum thing to know. If you go to a particular post and then click on the # in the upper right corner of the post like #70 - then the URL address of the browser changes to include the post. Now copy that URL and paste it and it can take people directly to that post.

I agree primer color would have been chosen for the paint within a few choices. Since they did paint the deluxe two-tone trucks the white (Corinthian or Wimbledon depending on year) before applying the 'other' color having a light grey primer wouldn't surprise me. Some of the colors used the reddish-brown primer underneath like seen on this NOS tool compartment door and surround. I've never found a Ford reference that says which primer color was used under which body color.

I’ve had several original paint cars and trucks over the years and am confident this is original paint all over (oddly the step on the driver side might have been repainted at one point). The bed is in incredibly good condition, so I suspect you’re right on the truck being fitted with a camper for a long time.
Thanks all.
