Hey guys I was just wondering if anyone has ever adapted a TBI fuel injection setup to fit a 400. If so what kinda power and gas milage did it get? I was thinking of just getting one out of a juk yard not the aftermarket kind.
THanks
David
What was the last year that 400s were made? 1982? I had a 1983 Crown Vic wagon with a 302 that had the TBI system. Very possible that setup was available in 1982 as well, but I don't know if it was ever on a 400.
It seems that the programming would be the same for any engine. Fuel/air ratio is the same. Sensors supply input. O2 sensor, throttle position sensor, and engine speed sensor were the only ones my '83 had. No MAF sensor.
The biggest problem I would see is that a TBI requires a high pressure tank mounted fuel pump, and a return line.
Also, the ignition system is involved. My '83 had the gutless distributor and EEC-III. I suppose you could run a regular ignition system, but you'd lose a lot of the advantage of running a computer controlled fuel injection system, since the computer couldn't vary the ignition timing in concert with the air/fuel mix.
As with anything else, it coud be done, but would it be worth it? Doubtful. The TBI systems were a step up from a carb, but not a large one.
Well I know at least one person with a injected 400......Me. I got a 77 f150 w/ a 400 in it. About 4 months ago my carb was getting to the point of needing to be rebuilt. Instead of spending money on something i didn't care for in the first place I decided to upgrade it. I had been looking at fuel injection for a while and decided to spend the extra money i had at the time. I ordered Holleys 700 cfm commander 950 system. To take full avantage of computer controlled stuff I got a dizzy out of a 90's 460 and slid that it. Got it all on and tuned and well i like it. mpg went from 7-8 in town to 11-12. Still not the best but not bad for a worn out motor that needs LOTS of performance mods and being driving by a idiot teenager. Worth $1300? That all depends on the person. It'll still take a while to pay for itself in fuel bills but the driveabilty and reliablity are finally getting closer to where I like em. So I like it.
