First off, I have changed everything ignition related except the fuel filter on this thing and I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before I do so.
When I'm idling or driving slowly up hill (forward), the truck will stall repeatedly and sometimes will flood. I have no problem when I'm pointed the other direction however and if I'm driving more than 5 miles per hour up a steep hill, it works fine. I do have a slow fast idle 1,000rpm (should be 1,900) but my curb idle is at 650rpm just as called for in the repair manual. It will not idle well even in neutral or park. Is this a fuel filter, fuel pump, carb float problem or something else???????
I had about the same problem today. The first long road trip sense I had the truck. Ran great on the road, but the idle got rougher and rougher at a stop, finally started dieing.
Got home, pulled the carb, pulled the float and checked in the bowl, nothing. pulled the EGR valve and cleaned it. Put everything back togather and runs fine.
I have no clue what fixed it, and was thinking vacuum leak.
I pulled each float bowl sight screw and didn't see gas in either. Could this also cause the problem. The manual says the level should be right at the opening. I haven't rebuilt a carb for 15 years and I really don't want to do so if not absolutley nessesary. From what I hear about these holleys, they are not easy to work on.
Could you have a inline filter someplace...if not near the carb but close to the gas tank? Some models has one if its not...then suspect the fuel pump, remove the fitting to check by rotating the engine..... check for fuel, and don't light up.
I only have the fuel filter (cartage type) that is right at the fuel line connection point at the carb. I can't find it at any of the parts stores so I'll have to check ford. I will also check into adjusting the float bowl levels primary and secondary. Hopefully that will be the problem. I had a fast idle problem and couldn't figure out what every one was talking about to adjust it. Well, I just found out the little plastic cam is broken on mine!!! No wonder I couldn't get it.
Go to WAlmart an get the clear line filter with all the fitting in the package, you'll be able to see water and dirt and even if you're getting fuel to the carb....
