So I acquired a REALLY rusty and beat up 2000 F350 farm truck with the V10 several years ago. This truck is now used EXCLUSIVELY for plowing my driveway, so it's used maybe half dozen times a year in the winter (temps below 30) for maybe 15-20 minutes at a time.
I had a transmission cooler line rot out a couple of times now and have patched it up with a rubber hose section. I'm now dealing with another leak and I'm contemplating bypassing the cooler all together and just looping the output line from the tranny directly back to the input line.
I'm pretty sure if I attempt to properly replaced the line I'll break either cooler either at the radiator or the aux cooler. Like I said it's used ONLY for plowing for really short times so I think I might be ok without the cooler. This would be a cheaper and easier fix for me and then I don't have to worry about future leaks from the cooler or cooler lines.
Asking your thoughts, do you think the tranny would be ok for 20 minutes in freezing weather, never going out of first or reverse? Or will it overheat? Handling ford...
Loop it or you could get 3/8 nickel copper brake line to make a cooling loop and strap it right against the truck frame, it won't rot and it will dissipate heat into the steel frame. Not for a daily driver but it will work for a while in this app. That frame is thick and cold, so's the fluid, so its gonna take a while to get up and past temp.
