Arrow help wanted

well i need some advice because i have a 62 ford f100 and it had a 302 in it from a mustang and make a long story short i need a new engine and the problem is, i dont know what to put in it and whatever i decide to put in i want it to be high performance and i need to spend less than 4000... so here is the deal i still have my 302 block and i was thinking about getting it vatted and bored over 30 and put the edelbrock RPM performer package in (edelbrock aluminum heads, cam, intake, carb.,) but the thing is.. is that my truck is a little heavy. but im not sure how well it would do? because i had a stock 302 in it before and it did pretty fine but not good enough..... but if i got a big block i would need to change my engine mounts and transmissionand that would be a real hassle. but the main reason i need this truck a fast as possable is because i need to be able to beat the **** out of a 67 el caminio with a 350 and extra performance parts (a little bet) ... and i know a 302 can kick a 350's *** with the right parts but.. im not sure about in my truck?.. so if anyone has and suggestions i would like to hear them

Can you say BLOWER or how about Nitrous. How big a bet are we talking. Why not swallow your pride pay the bet and build a reliable engine that will go for more than a quarter mile.

for $1500 you can put a stroker kit in it to make it a 347 I think which would give you the torque to get off the line faster and also get a stall in it to keep the rpms up so you dont bog down. and definitley put a better ignition in it. I like mallory unilites. should be able to do it for right around 4k. and if you can find em get some windsor heads to put on it. they breath better and I think thats all that made a 302 boss a boss engine. but im not 100% sure about that fact.

do you think my 62 truck is too heavy for the edelbrock RPM performer package? because in a dyno test it shows an increase in hp and torque compared to a stock 302.

I dont think so, the rpm package is just the name. its dual plane so it has better low end torque to high end horsepower range, the single planes give you better top end but bad low end power. I have 351C that I put a mild cam and the performer package with a c4 w/shift kit and a 3.00 open rear on and it does pretty good, its a 70 mercury montego that weighs in at 3600 with me in it and it pulls a 14 flat in the 1/4 @ 92mph. so in a truck I would figure your not gonna blow any doors off with a 302 but it should run pretty good. your biggest problem is that elcamino. its got a lot less weight to pull. when I had a 302 in the 70 it did good to pull a 15.5

You can always do what I did. Throw a dual quad Edelbrock intake on it with 2 500 cfm carbs. You could always look for a 302 roller motor in it out of a early nineties Mustang from a wrecking yard. That is also what I am doing. There is enough power in that to get your truck going! And don't forget about the headers!

I am going to have to second the stroker motion...

A 347 build up kit only runs $700, go with the 351w heads(yes, this makes the Boss) and you should have plenty of power. I have read build ups on just a plain 302 that can get you close to 400 hp without even dumping a lot of cash, of course engine longetivity may be an issue, but it runs nice .

Good luck, I hope the bet will cover the cost of the motor!

I have to agree with the stroker...kind of. Why not get a 351 motor and build it up. It's already got all the woork done to get the extra torque, more cubes and would be more dependable with less problems. Get the heads ported, they have flow problems on the exhaust side and some headers. Before you put too much into it, you're already close to 300 horse. Best of all you should have 400+ lbs of torque.

Damn, I need a job & came to apply!

OK, My guess would be....

$4000.00 & you have the 302 block.

you can build a pretty good engine with 4 grand, that is if you do most of the labor yourself minus the machine work.

dump that 4 grand into that 302 & I'll bet that the 350 will be hiring for more powered gerbils just look at your tail lights.

I would say it will not take much to make a 302 eat at 350 and crap dodges.
go with a nice roller cam and the edlebrock package with headers and you
will have the 350 crying "uncle" in no time. Or if you are really adventurous and
can find more money try to find and do a 312 with an original paxton on it. hehehe.
