Overheating question
I have a 1971 302 with a C4 automatic. The engine has less than 15000 miles on it. The radiator is new. It’s a triple core aluminum oversized with a shroud. If I put it in gear and let it sit with the brake applied it overheats, or reaches 220 degrees plus in about 15/20 minutes. I’m basically talking about a drive-thru scenario. Is that normal or acceptable? Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Anytime sitting in traffic etc for any length of time, I slip my automatic transmissions into neutral. I learned this from watching the temp gauge on the 47RE behind my Cummins in a dodge. Heat will go up extremely fast in stop and go traffic.

Your idle mixture and timing also play a big part in how hot it will get sitting at idle. Low base timing and using the ported rather than full manifold vacuum port will keep timing retarded and this can lead to overheating. You might try more base timing and compare and tune the idle screws to best idle vacuum plus 1/8 turn. An external transmission cooler will take some of the load off the radiator as well.
